What do the dictionaries contain?
In addition to the entry word itself, the dictionaries include information on pronunciation, inflection, part of speech, and translation. In most cases, there are also grammar comments, word explanations, style comments, factual information, grammatical constructions, and language examples.
Entry Word
The entry form usually consists of a single word but can also be a longer phrase, especially in compound verbs (e.g., like) and societal terms (e.g., public legal aid). Entry words that consist of compounds are separated by vertical bars. This marking is primarily to shorten the word's inflection indication and should not be seen as a fully elaborated division into compound elements. Entry words may be followed by an alternative form that typically has the same pronunciation but different spelling, e.g., sjal or schal. Note that pronunciation and inflection apply to the entry word rather than the alternative form.
Pronunciation
Lexin was originally developed for use in immigrant education, i.e., by individuals learning Swedish. This means that pronunciation guides are only available for Swedish words.
Length
Long sound is denoted with a colon immediately after the long sound, e.g., skalla [²sk'al:a] and skala [²sk'a:la]
Quality
Regarding vowels, a colon will also denote quality, e.g., mat [ma:t] and matt [mat:]
Word Stress
Only grave accent is indicated. It is marked with a raised two in front of the word (see examples under Length above). Grave accent is found in e.g., bùren (to carry) while acute accent is found in búren (to bur).
Stress
Main stress is marked by an apostrophe before the vowel in the stressed syllable, e.g., ABF [a:be:'ef] and ide [²'i:de]. Single syllable words do not receive stress marks except in expressions with verb+particle and reflexive verbs that are combined, e.g., tittar på [tit:arp'å:] and ger sig [j'ersej]. Substress in compounds can be inferred from length marking. The final prolonged sound receives stress, e.g., utslagsröst [²'u:tsla:gsrös:t].
Consonants
No special symbols are used for [tj], [sj], and [ng], e.g., tjugo [²tj'u:ge] and [²sj'ung:a]. The supradental found in some dialects is marked with an underscore under the two segments, e.g., bord [bo:r_d], barn [ba:r_n], fort [for_t:] and törst [tör_s:t].
Vowels
The various vowel sounds are illustrated by examples:
- [a:] - sa [sa:], sal [sa:l]
- [a] - hall [ha:l], sagt [sak:t], bankomat [bangkom'a:t]
- [e:] - be [be:], vet [ve:t]
- [e] - bestå [best'å:], vett [vet:], fäll [fel:]
- [i:] - bi [bi:], sil [si:l]
- [o:] - sol [so:l], ro [ro:]
[o] - rott [rot:], ost [os:t], motiv [mot'i:v]
[u:] - bu [bu:], lus [lu:s]
[u] - buss [bus:], mustasch [must'a:sj]
[y:] - by [by:], syl [sy:l]
[y] - synonym [synonym], syll [syl:]
[å:] - gå [gå:], gås [ gå:s]
[å] - gosse[²g'ås:e], gått[ ]gåt:], ombudsman[²'åm:bu:dsman:] [ä:] - fä fä:, säl sä:l bä bä:: märr mär:, herre här: snö snö:, söt sö:t snör snö:r løss løs:, först först fördela för^ Diphthongs Diphthongs are marked with an underscore between the two vowel symbols, for example. car [ Inflection The inflected forms of inflected words are written out in full. An exception is such compounds where the elements are separated by a vertical bar ‑ in such cases only the inflection of the latter element is given back, kar:en ‑ kar ↓ nden. Words within normally inflected word classes that for some reason lack inflection are marked as uninflected . . . . . **Translation:** - On the onset of something great Your love came like an acrobat It danced around my dreary doubts Shine so bright within my heart Kindled dreams while we’re apart
- [o:] - sol [so:l], ro [ro:]
